Climbing in Siurana Area, Catalunya: The Spanish sport climbing venue of Siurana, in the heart of Catalunya, is no great secret. With so many classic hard test-pieces surrounding this beautiful cliff-top village and seemingly just as many of the world's best climbers visiting every winter. With so many completely separate sectors spread out along the village promontory and valley below, even during the busiest of periods it never feels particularly crowded.
On most sectors the rock is generally very solid, bulging orange and grey streaked limestone of immaculate quality. Aesthetically it really is beautiful to look at, especially on the frequently sunny days that occur in Siurana, and you won't be disappointed when you climb on it either. To sum up the climbing in Siurana in one word: CRIMPS...and lots of them! But you'll also find pockets in abundance, as well as some incredible tufas (sector L'Olla) and even a few slopers if you venture onto one of the sandstone routes! Siurana has often been described as a classic 'old-school' destination, with stiff grades and super-technical climbing; factors which may have led to it going slightly out of vogue in recent years, in favour of the long and pumpy stamina routes available at more recently developed crags in Spain.
The local area: Cornudella de Monsant is a perfect base from which to reach Siurana, Monsant, Margalef, Alberacin and Arboli. Its ancient windy streets are a mixture of bustling charm and lively bars and ancient stone buildings. The Siurana lake is a ten minute drive but the coast of Cambrils can be reached in 45 minutes for a beach rest day. If you’re in Siurana you can visit a the local wine cooperative in the village of Cornudella de Montsant with very good wine. Siurana has fabulous sport and mountain crags and you will also have the opportunity to trail run here and visit the sea at Cambrils. You will have the chance to sample a tapas during the week as well as enjoy the music and spirit of this area famous for its vineyards and beautiful coastline.
Group Bookings & minimum numbers: If you have a minimum of 4 people and a maximum of 10 we are happy to offer the trip on dates suitable to you. Guide ratio is maximum 1:6 so larger groups can be catered for if you would like to bring more people.
Level?: Climbers should be able to tie on and belay and climb French grade 4/5 competently. If you would like to improve your grade and technical skills in a supportive atmosphere and have a great holiday this is for you. Expect to want to recalibrate your climbing horizons and goals that you have set for yourself. We will work with you on your climbing development, including training for lead climbing and coaching on personal climbing techniques and styles. The crags we use are perfect for all climbing levels so you can enjoy a great holiday and climb some excellent routes.
Equipment: Bring your own harness, boots, chalk bag, quickdraws and rope 60m + (one between 2)
Accommodation: We will stay at the beautiful Siurana refuge or in apartment accommodation in Cornudella de Monsant. It is possible to swim in the local piscina and also in lake Siurana. Both are stunning options with lively restaurants and bars close by. Accommodation at the refuge is dormitory style and the apartment accommodation is based on 2-3 people sharing a room. Single room supplement available in apartments.
