Pyrenees wildlife and more
Yes you will have the opportunity to see a broad selection of wildlife during your stay in the French Pyrenees or Spain! With our expeditions further afield our keen locals will help you spot some fantastic species as in Steve Backshalls extreme mountain challenge. Wherever we go we love animals and spotting how they live and move.
For bird knowledge of Ariege we rely on one of our team Richard Prime who offers bird watching holidays.
Spring is exceptional with the arrival in mid-April of Golden Oriole, Bee-eaters, Black Kites, Wryneck, etc. Rollers are here for 2 to 3 weeks around mid-August. There is also a fascinating autumn migration from early to mid-Sep. Richard has assisted in the Bearded Vulture conservation programme during the winter period which involves feeding them in times of need to boost the breading programme. We very strong interest in all 3 Vulture species found in the Ariege: Bearded, Griffon & Egyptian (summer only).
We support and can provide information on the protection and development of Brown Bears in the Pyrenees. We can also help you to hopefully observe other 'furry-friends' such as Marmots & Izzard on our treks above 2000m.
Marmots and Isard
The spring time is a perfect time to see marmots and isard in the Orlu nature reserve. Isard can be found on the jasse en gaudu.
